Controversial Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 - Innovative Yet Polarizing
By Pedro and Paulo Zambarda de Araujo Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 garnered a polarized response from critics. While some lauded its innovative high-tech mobility, shared progression system, and interconnected game modes, others found the campaign weak and lacking in originality. One review in Gadgets360 went so far as to call the campaign the worst in the series, while noting the addictive nature of the Endgame mode. The same review cited issues with the co-op focus negatively impacting solo play, bizarre and out-of-place missions, frustrating boss encounters, and a general lack of memorable moments and recycled environments. Paulo Zambarda de Araujo, a PlayersForLife contributor, touched on Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 during a livestream discussion about Overwatch. Released on November 14, 2025, the conversation included a mention of what Paulo considered the franchise's repetitive and inconsequential updates. According to the game's Steam page, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, is the most ambitious Black Ops title to date. It introduces a Titanfall-esque wall-jump mechanic and a massive Zombies mode map, Ashes of the Damned, complete with a drivable truck named Ol’ Tessie.
Open Playlists Shine Amidst Controversial Co-op Campaign in Black Ops 7
A welcome addition for many players is the Open Playlists feature, which loosens the constraints of Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM), leading to more consistent online lobbies. However, the game has faced criticism. The campaign, designed as a four-player co-op experience, is always online, which prevents pausing even when playing solo. Furthermore, the use of generative AI for in-game assets and calling cards has been described as contributing to a soulless feeling in certain missions. Many levels also reuse multiplayer and Warzone maps, altered with hallucinogenic fear toxins. Set in 2035, Black Ops 7 plunges players into a world teetering on the edge of chaos due to violent conflicts and psychological warfare. David Mason leads an elite squad on a clandestine mission in the sprawling Mediterranean city of Avalon, where they uncover a deep conspiracy that forces them to confront their own troubled pasts. This narrative unfolds through an innovative co-op campaign, playable solo or with a squad.
Black Ops 7 Multiplayer Mode Unveils Impressive Arsenal and Massive Zombies Map
The multiplayer mode launches with a robust selection of content, including sixteen 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps. Players can master an arsenal of advanced weaponry and utilize the sophisticated Onimovement system to dominate their opponents. Treyarch's signature Zombies mode transports players to the Dark Aether in its largest and most terrifying map yet. (This text does not necessarily reflect the opinion of Portal Uai.)
