Lara Croft Returns in 2026 and 2027: Through a Remake and New Game

Tomb Raider Returns in 2026 & 2027: Catalyst and Legacy of Atlantis with Alix Wilton Regan as Lara Croft

The Game Awards ceremony in 2025 featured the official reveal of two Tomb Raider games, which had leaked hours before the event: Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a major installment in the series' chronology, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a modern reimagining of the original 1996 game. Alix Wilton Regan will voice Lara Croft in both titles.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst - Ambitious Adventure Through Ancient Forces with Lara Croft in 2027

Tomb Raider: Catalyst, developed by Crystal Dynamics since their 2022 partnership announcement with Amazon, is slated for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Amazon Game Studios will publish the title. The game aims to be the most ambitious entry in the series to date, promising to be the most expansive and detailed world in the series yet, filled with complex tombs and puzzles. The game features a new wrist-mounted grappling hook for traversal and combat. The first trailer shows Lara Croft using the grappling hook to scale a cliff overlooking an ancient city in Northern India, before a cataclysm unleashes strange crystals that begin to destroy the environment. The trailer cuts to Lara fleeing through the collapsing city. A mythical catastrophe sets the stage for the game's narrative, awakening ancient forces. Lara Croft finds herself in a race against time amid hordes of treasure hunters, where distrust, betrayal, and high-stakes consequences are central themes. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Catalyst promises to be the most expansive and detailed world in the series yet, filled with complex tombs and puzzles. Early previews suggest Catalyst may evoke the feel of Nathan Drake's early adventures.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis - A Bridge to a New Era in 2026

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, developed in partnership with Flying Wild Hog, is also scheduled to release in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, in celebration of the franchise's 30th anniversary. This title revisits the original 1996 game, modernizing the graphics with Unreal Engine 5, updating the gameplay, and enriching the narrative to appeal to a contemporary audience while preserving the original spirit. Players can expect a reimagined quest for the Scion, exotic locales, and iconic puzzles. Legacy of Atlantis emphasizes platforming, suggesting an action-packed approach. The success of Legacy of Atlantis will be crucial for maintaining momentum leading into the release of Catalyst. Any significant delays or negative reception could affect the overall brand perception. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is designed to act as a bridge between generations of Tomb Raider fans. It aims to reintroduce Lara to audiences before the release of Catalyst in 2027, when it is positioned as the new pillar of the saga.
