Breakthrough Game of the Year Contender Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Earns $175M on €8.5M Budget

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a JRPG developed in France by Sandfall Interactive with a team of fewer than 40 people, has drawn inspiration from classic Japanese titles and captured widespread attention. With awards season underway, Clair Obscur is a strong contender for Game of the Year, leading Guillaume Broche, Sandfall's Creative Director and CEO, to comment in The New York Times about the game's success. Broche predicts that more games like Expedition 33—developed by small teams with low budgets—are on the horizon. As of October 8th, Clair Obscur had sold 5 million copies, generating $175 million in revenue—over 17 times its development budget. Sandfall attributes the game's budget of less than €8.5 million (under $10 million) to avoiding open-world design in favor of the classic JRPG formula of long, detailed corridor levels.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33: Budget-Friendly Game of the Year Contender

Developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched on April 24, 2025, with an ESRB rating of Mature 17. It is available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Critics on OpenCritic gave it a top score of 92/100 and a 97% recommendation rate. After securing a deal with Kepler Interactive, Sandfall expanded its core team to 30, hired a small animation team in South Korea, and collaborated with external studios for localization and marketing. Microsoft Gaming also contributed to its visibility by showcasing the game at its events and on Game Pass. Alongside Clair Obscur, noteworthy titles of 2025 include Skate Story, Octopath Traveler 2, Routine, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, The Running Man, Predator: Badlands, Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1, Pluribus Season 1, The Witcher Season 4, and IT: Welcome to Derry. Splinter Cell: Deathwatch may be worth skipping, while games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Sleep Awake have received mixed reviews. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the frontrunner for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025. Sandfall Interactive aimed to prove that creating an outstanding game doesn't require a massive budget.
