Abrams’ Superman Offer Spared Fraser from Mummy Resurrection

In the 2000s, Brendan Fraser auditioned for the role of Superman in Superman: Flyby, a film written by J.J. Abrams. Fraser revealed that he even did a screen test and wore the Superman costume. Describing the script as “Shakespeare in space,” Fraser noted the ambitious scope, which featured a science fiction-based origin story for Superman that included a civil war on Krypton. However, Fraser had reservations about taking on such an iconic role. According to Fraser, “If I accept, Superman will be carved into my headstone,” indicating his concern about how the role would permanently define his career. Looking back, Fraser believes his decision was ultimately beneficial, as he has always valued the diversity of his roles and did not want to be typecast. In other movie news, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as BettinelliOlpin and Gillett, will direct a new Mummy film, a follow-up to The Mummy Returns, where the Scorpion King dies amidst the wreckage at the end. David Coggeshall is writing the script, and he confirmed his involvement on Twitter.
