Kojima Mourns Death of Udo Kier; Actor Was Cast for Role in OD

Mourned by Fans: Udo Kier's Legacy in Cinema & Gaming Expands Beyond Grave

This past weekend brought sad news for fans of cinema and gaming, as legendary German actor Udo Kier passed away at the age of 81. His partner, artist Delbert McBride, confirmed his death. Kier leaves behind a remarkable legacy of over 200 films across five decades. Known for his distinctive screen presence, he appeared in everything from arthouse films to B-movies, and was also set to appear in Hideo Kojima’s upcoming Xbox project, OD. Kier worked with a wide range of directors, including Andy Warhol, Lars Von Trier, Paul Morrissey, and Gus Van Sant. While his 1996 game debut in The Adventures of Pinocchio was relatively minor, he soon gained prominence as Yuri in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. He later lent his talents to voiceovers, such as Dr. Straub in Call of Duty: WWII, and delivered a chilling performance in Martha Is Dead.

Kier's Passing Delays Kojima's OD; Iconic Actor Leaves Lasting Impact in Cinema and Gaming

Kier was also slated to play a role in Hideo Kojima’s OD, but strike-related delays in Hollywood prevented Kojima and Kier from recording scenes together. Kojima expressed his grief on Twitter, stating, "Wow, I’m still stunned… the strike held us up big time, so we had to put filming on hold until next year. Even then, Udo and me, we kept in touch through emails all the time. When we caught up in Milan last month, he was so excited about getting back to work. He was his usual energetic self too, cracking jokes like only Udo could. I’m still having a hard time believing it." Kojima added, "Udo wasn’t just any actor—he was an icon. We’ve lost someone truly special. There’ll never be another like him, that’s for sure. Rest easy, Udo. You won’t be forgotten." Kier’s diverse roles and unique presence will be missed by many.
