Resident Evil Requiem's Multiplayer Roots Influence Single-Player Gameplay Enhancement

In a recent interview with Press Start Australia, producer Masato Kumazawa revealed that Resident Evil Requiem retains elements from its original multiplayer concept. The project began as an online game before evolving into the ninth main installment in the series. Kumazawa explained that while his team's multiplayer prototype proved enjoyable, it lacked sufficient horror elements. Consequently, they repurposed certain aspects for Requiem. "There are some leftover bits, but we can’t share what they are or how they work," Kumazawa stated. "When we looked at it as a multiplayer game, the horror side wasn’t strong enough... We made it fun in that version, but we thought real Resi fans might not enjoy it much." This led to the decision to revert to a single-player experience, incorporating some of the online elements to enhance the gameplay.

Resident Evil Requiem's Six-Year Evolution from Multiplayer to Single-Player Survival Horror

According to Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem on X, Resident Evil Requiem has been in development for six years, including a period of testing as a multiplayer game. Golem previously stated that Requiem (initially referred to as "Resident Evil 9") began as an online co-op game set on a Singapore-inspired island, internally codenamed "Apocalypse." However, the multiplayer concept was abandoned around 2020-2021, and the project was rebooted as a single-player survival horror title. Addressing fan expectations for Resident Evil games, Kumazawa noted, "I reckon fans want that survival horror scare factor. They wanna be terrified... So slapping on new skins and characters won’t cut it. We gotta give 'em something better." Kumazawa also noted that Requiem represents Capcom's largest and most expensive Resident Evil undertaking to date, alongside other projects such as the new remakes. Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
