Hollywood Leans into Anime Adaptations with Sony Pictures Leading the Way
Sony Pictures aims to capitalize on anime's rising popularity and lead the wave of Western studio adaptations. Shebnem Askin, a top executive and creative head at Sony Pictures International Productions, has been consulting with numerous anime studios to identify stories suitable for film adaptations. The studio is developing a Kingdom film, based on Yasuhisa Hara's manga, and has other adaptations in development. Askin said Sony Pictures intends these movies for theatrical release, viewing streaming services as partners rather than competitors. The cinematic success of anime such as Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man demonstrates the medium's potential.
