Patent Rejection Lifts Barriers for Palworld Against Combined Game Elements

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) has rejected a patent application from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company related to Pocketpair’s Palworld. The JPO concluded that the application simply combined elements from existing games, including ARK: Survival Evolved, Monster Hunter 4, Craftopia, and Pokémon GO, and thus did not meet the criteria for a new patent. This decision removes a significant legal hurdle for Palworld and Pocketpair, both in Japan and internationally. The JPO's rejection underscores its rigorous requirements for innovation, preventing companies—even major ones like Nintendo—from patenting commonplace combinations of existing ideas.
