Microsoft CEO Says True Rival of Xbox is TikTok

Microsoft CEO Sees Xbox's Primary Rival in Emerging Forms of Entertainment like TikTok

During a recent Tbpn livestream, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that Xbox's primary competition extends beyond other gaming systems to include platforms like TikTok. He noted Microsoft's increased focus on short-form video content, recognizing its impact on gamers' time. Nadella also emphasized that Windows represents Microsoft’s largest gaming business, particularly through Steam’s substantial market presence. Following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has become the world's largest video game company and aims to establish a presence across consoles, PCs, mobile devices, cloud services, and televisions. Nadella also discussed plans for the next Xbox, expressing the hope that it will further integrate with the PC ecosystem. Rumors suggest the new console will natively play games from platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store. Nadella explained that the original Xbox was designed to be a superior gaming PC, and now Microsoft is considering further convergence. He stressed the importance of continuous innovation within the gaming world to stay competitive against emerging forms of entertainment, such as TikTok, which he views as a significant competitor for user attention.

Emerging Rivals Shape Xbox's Future Battle for Online Attention, With TikTok Leading the Charge

These comments align with Microsoft's broader strategy, as Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, and Matt Booty, President of Game Content and Studios, have also framed Xbox's future as part of a larger battle for online attention against entertainment platforms like TikTok. Ultimately, Microsoft aims to be a major player in gaming across all available platforms.
