Xbox Chief Says Exclusive Games Are a Thing of the Past

Microsoft Embraces Cross-Platform Play, Ending Era of Xbox Exclusives

Microsoft has affirmed its commitment to a multiplatform approach, with Xbox head Sarah Bond telling Mashable, "Exclusivity? That's so last season." Bond emphasized the importance of cross-platform play, stating, "People want to play with friends, no matter what gadget they've got." She cited the widespread popularity of games like Call of Duty and Fortnite, which thrive because players can connect across PCs, consoles, and cloud platforms. According to Bond, Xbox aims to provide more ways for people to play together, regardless of their chosen device. This represents a significant departure from Microsoft's earlier strategy regarding game exclusives. For roughly 15 years, the company pursued exclusive titles for its Xbox consoles, investing heavily in Japanese developers for games such as Ninja Gaiden, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and Ace Combat 6. However, this strategy proved unsuccessful when audiences didn't respond well to Xbox One's exclusive games.

Cross-Platform Xbox Games Expanding to PlayStation and Switch by 2024

In 2016, Microsoft began releasing its exclusive games on PC via Windows, starting with Remedy's Quantum Break. This move signaled a gradual shift, resulting in the 2024 announcement that Xbox games would be available on competing consoles, including Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's Switch. Microsoft now envisions Xbox as a gaming platform accessible on virtually any device with a screen and internet connection.
