Potential Barriers for Independent Artists in Anime Theme Song Collaborations with Major Music Companies

Ichiro Yamaguchi, lead singer and guitarist for Sakanaction, discussed the band's work on the theme song for Orb, an anime produced by Madhouse. Yamaguchi highlighted a potential issue for artists not signed to Sony Music Japan. He explained that Aniplex, a Sony subsidiary, frequently selects artists and theme songs for its anime productions from its own connected music labels. This practice, he noted, can create obstacles for bands like Sakanaction when seeking opportunities to compose music for Aniplex shows. Despite this, Yamaguchi expressed his enjoyment of the experience and his desire to work on anime again. To navigate this challenge, Yamaguchi offered advice for other bands interested in contributing to anime. He suggested focusing on titles produced by studios not affiliated with a major music company or, alternatively, publicly expressing their interest to gain industry recognition.
