PS5 Animal Crossing Clone Causes Outrage Over Blatant Plagiarism

This blog post delves into the surge of games mimicking Animal Crossing's style, sparking debates about plagiarism, with a new PS5 title resembling New Horizons causing a stir, featuring an Indonesian developer named Wisnu Sudirman linked to the project.

PS5's Emerging Animal Crossing-like Stirs Controversy Over Copycat Design

Many games inspire imitation, though few manage to surpass the original. Titles like The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, and even the upcoming Black Myth: Wukong, have all seen their share of imitators. Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons is no exception, with new versions consistently emerging, now including one slated for the PlayStation 5.

PS5's Emerging Anime-inspired Village Stirring Controversy Over Similarities to Animal Crossing

The gaming landscape appears to be saturated with cozy life simulations, as the enduring success of certain titles continues to attract publishers and developers. Nintendo's Animal Crossing series, a perennial hit across its DS and 3DS iterations, saw a significant resurgence with its 2020 release on the Switch. This widespread popularity has evidently spurred other developers. Last January, a comparable title briefly appeared on the PlayStation Store before disappearing. Despite this, developers are reportedly preparing a new, visually similar game for the PS5. Wisnu Sudirman, an Indonesian game developer and General Manager at Gamepoc studio (which is reportedly difficult to find online), is developing an Animal Crossing-inspired game called Anime Village Online. Details about the game remain sparse, and promotional images exhibit characteristics often associated with AI generation. Currently, Anime Village Online is listed on the PlayStation Store wishlist, with a tentative release planned for 2027 on PS5. However, this title could face significant challenges if Nintendo decides to take action against the clone. It would not be surprising if Sony opts to remove the game from its store, especially given that it is not yet available for purchase.

Controversy Over Developers Emulating Successful Gaming Formulas in Legally Gray Territory

The continued emergence of these titles highlights an ongoing trend of developers seeking to capitalize on established gaming successes, often venturing into legally ambiguous territory.
