Take-Two and Embracer Negotiations Over Perfect Dark Revamp Collapse, Leading to Job Cuts and Studio Shutdowns

Perfect Dark was initially unveiled in 2020 as The Initiative's debut major project. Crystal Dynamics subsequently joined production as a co-producer alongside Microsoft's studio. A gameplay trailer for the title debuted at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. According to a report by Jason Schreier for Bloomberg, Take-Two Interactive engaged in discussions with Microsoft and Embracer, Crystal Dynamics' parent company, to bankroll and distribute this Perfect Dark revamp. These negotiations ultimately faltered due to an inability to agree on long-term franchise ownership, a critical factor influencing Take-Two's willingness to shoulder the project's risk and investment. The collapse of these talks resulted in an unspecified number of job cuts at Crystal Dynamics. Microsoft officially pulled the plug on the project in July 2025, simultaneously shuttering The Initiative studio amid a wave of layoffs.
