Live-Service Games Contribute Over 40% to Sony's First-Party Revenue

Sony maintains its strong focus on live-service games, even following the recent challenges with Concord. This commitment is underscored by the significant success of titles like Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show. In its latest financial report, Sony revealed that live-service games—including the MLB The Show series, Destiny 2, and Helldivers 2—generated over 40% of first-party game revenue in a single quarter. While the company continues to develop single-player titles such as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei, the spotlight is clearly on the positive financial impact of its live-service strategy. CFO Lin Tao described Concord's role in these initiatives as a worthwhile endeavor, explaining that it helped establish a continuous revenue stream that did not exist five years ago. He noted that PlayStation Studios had a limited offering of live-service games half a decade ago. Today, titles like Helldivers 2, MLB The Show, Gran Turismo 7, and Bungie's Destiny 2 consistently generate substantial revenue for the company. Despite this strong performance, Tao acknowledged that Sony still has much to learn in this area. The company is already realizing the benefits of its strategic shift over the past five years, even as it navigates ongoing challenges.
