Ubisoft CEO Blames Star Wars Brand Woes, Internal Issues for Underperformance of Star Wars Outlaws

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has attributed the underperformance of Star Wars Outlaws to a combination of internal issues within the game and challenges facing the Disney-owned Star Wars brand. The game, one of Ubisoft's major projects, launched for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in August 2024. Ubisoft had initially aimed to sell 7 million copies within its first year, but the title achieved only a million sales in its first month. During a shareholders meeting, Guillemot acknowledged that Star Wars Outlaws did not meet its sales objectives. He explained that the Star Wars brand itself was experiencing a "rocky" period at the time of the game's launch. Furthermore, Guillemot admitted to initial problems within the game, stating that the company immediately began addressing these issues. He noted that while Ubisoft has since resolved most problems, these early issues negatively impacted sales. Ubisoft plans to release an updated version of Star Wars Outlaws on additional consoles, including the Switch 2, in September 2025. Guillemot also directly criticized Disney, asserting that, in the view of many fans, the company has had "more missteps than successes."
