In an interview with Variety, Dong-hyuk admitted he had only a vague idea of the stories for seasons 2 and 3 initially, with a very different ending in mind. “As I worked on the script, creating characters and building the story foundation, I realized this wasn’t the right way to end things, and this was the better conclusion.” This drastic change in the ending compared to his initial plan is due to Gi-hun making a different decision than what he originally intended.
