Turns out Capcom first thought about Resident Evil 9 (RE9) as a multiplayer online game. But they soon realized that wasn’t what the fans wanted, so they switched gears and went with a single-player game instead. Koshi Nakanishi, the director of the game, spoke at Capcom Spotlight, and leaked scenes showed an early version experimenting with ideas like an open-world Resident Evil online game, which didn’t go down too well with fans. According to Nakanishi, they liked some of the ideas but realized it wasn’t what the fans wanted, so back to the drawing board they went. This jibes with what Dusk Golem said, that RE9 started production in 2019 as an open-world online game starring Leon and Jill, but was reset in 2021. RE9 is slated for release on February 27, 2025, promising a fresh spin on the series, with Capcom banking on a new heroine, Grace Ashcroft, to deliver chills that turn into an obsession. It’s designed to scare you out of your wits and keep you on edge while playing alongside the protagonist, but in such a gripping way that you just can’t quit.
