It has been several months since we last heard news about Painkiller, a reboot of a licensed title announced earlier this year. A memorable title from the 2000s, it established itself as an uncompromising outlet, driven by gothic art direction and a gameplay frenzy quite appreciated. In 2025, Purgatory opens its doors again, and it’s thanks to Saber Interactive, under the 3D Realms banner, which partnered with Anshar Studios to put Painkiller back on track. The result is a contemporary, edgy, brutal reading, above all intended to fit within modern genre standards without betraying its DNA.
Saber Interactive and 3D Realms have announced a release date for their reimagining of Painkiller on PS5 (October 9, 2025). To celebrate the upcoming launch, a brand new trailer showcasing pre-order bonuses and gameplay has been released on YouTube. The standard edition of the game is listed for £34.99/$39.99 on the PS Store.
The game will be released on October 9, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, of course pre-orders are now open. At launch, two versions will be available: the Standard ($39.99) includes the base game and the “Iron Crusade” skin pack featuring appearances for all four playable characters (Ink, Void, Sol, Roch) as well as six iconic weapons (Stakegun, Electrodriver, SMG, etc.). The Deluxe Edition ($49.99) goes further with the addition of three post-launch DLCs, each adding new character and weapon skins. A conventional approach, without surprises, but consistent. Finally, physical console editions include an exclusive “Burnished Pride” pack featuring golden skins for the six main weapons.
The universe remains as dark: dilapidated cathedrals, demonic creatures, and subversive biblical folklore all contribute to an oppressive, almost baroque atmosphere that aims to ensnare players. While waiting for a hands-on experience, the proposition appears promising and respectful of its origins, set for release on October 9, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with Standard and Deluxe editions available. The game is a reboot of the license announced in the early years, developed by Saber Interactive under the 3D Realms banner in collaboration with Anshar Studios. Inspired by the memorable title from the 2000s, it features a gothic artistic direction and frenetic gameplay adapted to modern FPS genre standards without abandoning its DNA. Pre-orders are now open.
