It fell to Capcom to close the Summer Game Fest on this Friday night with the most impactful revelation: Resident Evil Requiem, the long-awaited ninth game in the series.
The series producer, Jun Takeuchi, appeared minutes before the trailer reveal to remind that Resident Evil will mark its 30th anniversary next year and promised that the new game in the series would be revealed “in a blink of an eye.” The debut trailer was indeed the surprise saved for the end of the presentation.
Presenter Geoff Keighley noted that details would be discussed later but commented on Resident Evil Requiem, stating it will represent “an audacious shift for the franchise, both in tone and gameplay,” moving beyond survival horror to include “high-risk cinematic action.”
Contrary to rumors suggesting a starring role for Leon Kennedy, at least the first trailer focuses on the protagonism of a new character, Grace Ashcroft, likely the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft from Resident Evil Outbreak.
Capcom announced: “Get ready to experience a thrilling adventure that will send shivers down your spine.” The announcement continues, “A new era of survival horror begins in 2026. Technological advances combined with the development team’s extensive experience have resulted in a story featuring rich characters and more immersive gameplay than ever before.”
The producer revealed that “Resident Evil Requiem,” the ninth main installment in the series, returns players to the iconic Raccoon City, the birthplace of the biological disaster that shook the world. The game combines deeply terrifying aspects of psychological horror with breathtaking action that fans of the franchise know and love.
Resident Evil Requiem will be released as early as February 27, 2026, to coincide with the series’ 30th anniversary, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game will be showcased in detail at Gamescom in August.
