One of the fundamental principles of a successful conference is the effective opening and closing of its showcase, and this year, Summer Game Fest 2025 made a significant impact with its opening, as it was Mortal Shell 2 that kicked off the festivities. A darker, more brutal sequel, with power-ups at every level. While the first installment established a fairly classic formula, Mortal Shell 2 aims to refine every aspect: combat, exploration, world design, and possession mechanics—everything is improved. Goodbye to the methodical slowness of the past; Mortal Shell 2 now offers a faster, smoother combat system, and most importantly, one that is merciless. The endurance gauge has been removed, freeing players from a conventional genre constraint. In its place, players must adapt to a tense game rhythm where each strike, dodge, and execution demands precision and instinct. The gaming experience is immediate and visceral, driven by more dynamic animations and an unprecedented variety of weapons in the series, including firearms.
The concept of Shells, which are deceased warrior bodies used to acquire skills, is revisited with greater depth. In a world devastated by a long-forgotten war, the remains of legendary combatants can be found in the most remote corners. Embodiment of these warriors not only transforms gameplay but also allows players to explore their memories and uncover fragments of a shattered past. Mortal Shell 2 departs from its predecessor’s compartmentalized approach, presenting an open yet concise world. Players will navigate forgotten temples, misty impious forests, icy tombs, bony citadels, and more. Over 60 dungeons are spread throughout the game, each offering unique challenges to elevate the adventure. Visually, Mortal Shell 2 has captivated players with its retro-gothic macabre style, blending elements of baroque, surrealism, and organicity – a form of morbid beauty.
Planned for release in 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, Mortal Shell 2 is announced as a title to watch closely.
