Last month at the Hungarian GP, Sauber driver Gabriel Bortoleto ended an eight-year drought for Brazilians in Formula 1. His sixth-place finish also marked a three-year absence for Brazilian drivers in the top six; no Brazilian driver had achieved this since Felipe Massa finished sixth at the 2017 Bahrain GP, his final year in F1. At just 20 years and nine months old, Bortoleto also became the youngest Brazilian to ever finish among the top six in a race. This feat surpassed the previous record set by Felipe Massa, who finished sixth for Sauber at the 2002 Malaysian GP at the age of 20 years and ten months. Bortoleto’s recent achievements build on his strong performance, as he has now scored points for the second consecutive race. If he earns just two more points, he could conclude the year among Brazil’s top ten scorers in Formula 1 history.
