Nintendo Switch 2 Rules Japanese Christmas Sales with Record-Breaking Numbers and Top-Selling Games

Nintendo is dominating the Japanese Christmas sales season in both hardware and physical software, according to Famitsu. In the first two weeks of December 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold approximately 400,000 units. Over 190,000 of these sales occurred last week alone (Dec 1 – Dec 7: 203,398 units). In comparison, the PlayStation 5 sold nearly 19,000 units, with the new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition accounting for over 12,000 of those sales. While still strong, the PS5’s sales lagged behind even the original Nintendo Switch, which moved 31,000 units the week prior. This hardware dominance is reflected in software sales, where Nintendo Switch 2 titles lead the charts, especially Mario Kart World and Pokemon Legends: ZA. Nintendo’s strong sales are supported by impressive financial results. In Q2 2025, Nintendo: Generated $3.7 billion in revenue, a 90% increase year-over-year. Achieved an operating profit of $950 million, up 19.5% from the previous year. Sold 4.54 million Nintendo Switch 2 hardware units and 11.95 million software units between September 30, 2025, and the end of the quarter. Since its release, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 10.36 million hardware units and 20.62 million software units, according to Nintendo’s figures.

Nintendo Switch Dominates Japanese Market with Mario Kart World and Pokemon Sales Boom

The original Nintendo Switch remains the top-selling console in Japan, with over 20 million units sold. The new OLED model has already sold over 900,000 units in Japan. The current sales charts rank the standard PlayStation 5 and Digital Edition sixth and tenth, respectively. The Xbox Series X Digital Edition and Xbox Series S sold 131 and 33 units, respectively, in their debut week on the Japanese market. The PlayStation 5 Pro is not present on the current sales charts. Due to its strong performance, Nintendo has increased its sales target for the Nintendo Switch 2 in fiscal year 2026 from 15 million to 19 million units. The forecast for software sales has also been raised from 45 million to 48 million units. The new Pokemon game continues to attract players, with over 2.2 million units sold. Mario Kart World is performing exceptionally well; its sales are rapidly approaching the total number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles sold, suggesting a high attach rate for the title.
