Katsura Hashino, director of the Persona series and creator of Metaphor: ReFantazio at Atlus, anticipates a “JRPG 3.0” era that will revolutionize the design and structure of games in the genre. According to Gamesradar, Hashino outlined a three-part division of JRPG history—1.0, 2.0, and the upcoming 3.0—at a recent conference on November 24, 2025, as reported by Mohd772. Hashino believes that JRPG 3.0 is on the horizon and will introduce a new structure and presentation, breaking away from many current concepts. He cited the era of true classics as JRPG version 1.0, a period likely defined by foundational titles like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy from the 1980s—games that defined the genre and established JRPGs as an integral part of millions of players’ lives. Hashino characterizes today’s JRPGs as version 2.0. He attributes this to decades of refinement, resulting in higher quality, responsiveness, and the increasing incorporation of action-based mechanics. He hints that JRPG 3.0 will introduce further novelty in design and presentation. In related gaming news, Kojima Productions, headed by Hideo Kojima, recently announced Overdose, an open-world action-adventure game designed for the latest consoles. A release date has not yet been scheduled.
