Romero Games has laid off all staff who had been working on a new, unannounced FPS game since 2022. Funding for that game, along with other undisclosed projects at various studios, was abruptly halted yesterday. These layoffs at Romero Games occurred without warning. Brenda Romero stated in an official statement that Microsoft Gaming had been their main publisher. The company is now determining its next steps and working to support the affected team members. Many of the affected staff are veterans, with over 20 years of experience in the game industry. In their message, Romero Games also appealed to other companies, hoping they might assist in finding new employment for the laid-off staff. Numerous former Romero Games employees have stated on social media that their dismissals are a direct consequence of the recent Microsoft layoffs. Romero Games had traditionally focused on smaller projects. However, this team was preparing for a significantly larger undertaking: an FPS game built with Unreal Engine 5, envisioned as a showcase for their grandest ambitions. Tragically, they have now become part of the more than 9,000 layoffs announced by Microsoft this week.
