YouTube is implementing significant changes to its monetization policies, effective July 15. The platform is specifically focusing on identifying and flagging content that lacks originality or is excessively repetitive. Their goal is to raise the bar for the YouTube Partner Program, ensuring that only truly original and authentic content is eligible for monetization. This means that if your videos are deemed mass-produced or repetitive, they might lose their earning potential, even if they were previously approved for monetization. YouTube has not yet provided a definitive definition of what constitutes “mass-produced” or “repetitive” content. However, it is anticipated that AI-generated content, automated compilations, and even certain reaction videos could be impacted. This change is being introduced to address a significant surge in videos created using automated tools, which frequently repurpose existing content with minimal original contribution. YouTube states that this new rule aims to filter out content they no longer consider authentic. Additionally, YouTube is revising other categories within YouTube Studio. For example, they are removing the “Bare Skin (Image Only)” ad category and introducing new options such as “Reference to Sex.” These updates aim to provide creators with greater control over the types of ads displayed on their channels. These changes follow a series of other recent restrictions, such as the prohibition on unsupervised live streaming for users under 16. The full scope and impact of these new policies are yet to be fully understood, but YouTube has indicated that they will provide further details shortly.
