A wave of layoffs at Microsoft on July 2, 20XX claimed another casualty: the eagerly anticipated reboot of Perfect Dark. The confirmation came in an email sent by Matt Booty, Xbox’s Head of Content at Microsoft, to all Xbox employees. Alongside the game’s cancellation, the email confirmed that The Initiative, the studio developing the game, was shut down. Zack Zwiezen reported the cancellation on July 2, 20XX. Founded in 2018, The Initiative was led by Darrell Gallagher (formerly of Crystal Dynamics and one of the minds behind the Tomb Raider reboot) and comprised numerous industry veterans. Perfect Dark was intended as the studio’s debut game, but it now shares the same fate as Cliffhanger Games: closure before completing its inaugural project. In the email, Booty also confirmed that other projects were being canceled and that HR would provide support to those affected by the layoffs and studio shutdown. Microsoft is reportedly laying off around 9,000 people, with many Xbox employees affected by the cuts. Perfect Dark was officially announced in 2020 during that year’s The Game Awards. Its first trailer, shown during an Xbox Showcase last June, revealed gameplay for Perfect Dark planned for 2024, though a release date wasn’t included in the trailer. In 2023, an IGN report claimed that Perfect Dark’s development was reportedly troubled due to poor management and internal creative differences. At one point, development reportedly restarted, and the project shifted to Unreal Engine 5.
Perfect Dark is the third project to be canceled as a result of Wednesday’s layoffs, alongside Rare’s EverWild and a new, unannounced MMORPG that was being developed by the Elder Scrolls Online team. This marks the fourth round of layoffs at Xbox in the past 18 months, which many view as a direct consequence of the Activision Blizzard acquisition in October 2023. Since the acquisition was completed, the gaming division has been under immense pressure to boost profit margins and recoup the US$69 billion spent. Since 2022, the global gaming industry has seen numerous mass layoffs. Meanwhile, this period in Brazil has been marked by the approval of the Game Law, pioneering legislation poised to positively impact the country’s entire electronic gaming production chain. Pedro Zambarda, editor-in-chief of PlayersForLife, delves into both these narratives in his book Videogame Crash: From the Video Game Law Milestone to Mass Layoffs, which is already available for purchase on Amazon.
