The Nintendo Switch 2 has sold an impressive 5 million units in just three weeks, setting a new record in the console market. Interestingly, Nintendo prioritized its bigger markets over its home country in terms of supplying the Nintendo Switch 2. The new Nintendo console hit stores on June 5th and sold 3.5 million units in its first four days. The sales pace hasn’t slowed much after the launch euphoria, and now Nintendo reports that over 5 million units have been sold, with 1.8 million in the US, Canada, and South America, 1.48 million in Japan, 1.2 million in Europe, and 500,000 in other regions. There have been reported issues with a few units of the Nintendo Switch 2 showing signs of tampering and staples puncturing screens after store employees staple the receipt to the box. The numbers were apparently posted prematurely on Nintendo’s official website, in the investor relations section, but have since been removed. It is expected that Nintendo will officially release the numbers in a future earnings report. For comparison, the PlayStation 4 sold 4.2 million units in its first month in 2013, and the original Nintendo Switch sold 2.7 million in its debut month in 2017. In other words, the Nintendo Switch 2 has surpassed the PS4 record before completing its first month of existence.
Nintendo aims to sell 15 million Nintendo Switch 2 units during its launch window and 45 million games in the current fiscal year, ending in March 2026. The Switch 2 will benefit from a significantly larger stock than the original Switch at its time and likely more than Sony’s PS5, which was released amidst the pandemic, a time when production and distribution bottlenecks severely impacted stock replenishment.
