The Nintendo Switch 2 allows connecting family and friends in a much superior way to what is possible on the first Nintendo Switch, something that a camera can greatly assist with. However, there are still many high-quality cameras not compatible with the new console. According to TheVerge, Elgato and Ugreen are working to make many of their latest cameras compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, and they’re also working on firmware updates for these cameras. The issue with webcam compatibility on the Nintendo Switch 2 lies in the camera’s modes that it cannot properly play when connected. Elgato is adding an additional low-resolution 480p mode to its Facecam MK.2 and Facecam Neo for compatibility with the Nintendo Switch 2. Ugreen states that a camera needs to avoid advertising modes or protocols not recognized by the Nintendo Switch 2, among other conditions, to work with it. Not using the HID protocol, being set for synchronous transfer mode, and having low frame rate support disabled are conditions Ugreen describes as necessary. Elgato disagrees on some points, stating that the frame rate ratio should be p30, using YUY2 encoder, requiring USB 2.0, and having synchronous transfer mode available in video mode 640×480 or 640×360 are necessary.
Some Ugreen cameras like CM826 / 55512, CM797 / 45644, and CM825 / 75330 already work with the Nintendo Switch 2. The camera updates from Elgato and Ugreen are expected to be released by the end of July, respectively. As it seems to be more of a technical problem rather than the camera’s specifications, the camera companies may have to address this compatibility issue. Nintendo did not provide a comment regarding this webcam compatibility situation for the Nintendo Switch 2. By expanding the list of devices compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, both brands aim to release various camera updates significantly by the end of July or June, respectively.
