Marvel Tōkon Fighting Souls: A Game by Arc System Works, Creators of Dragon Ball FighterZ

Among the biggest revelations at the State of Play event on the night of June 4-5, 2025, was the announcement of “Marvel Tōkon Fighting Souls,” the next fighting game developed by Arc System Works. It is remarkable to consider that Marvel and PlayStation have partnered with the creators of Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ to develop the next 4v4 versus fighting game. This collaboration extends beyond a simple development agreement, as there is a genuine effort to merge two distinct cultural legacies: bringing together the best elements of Western and Japanese universes in this explosive yet audacious fusion. It is precisely this creative vision that sets “Marvel Tōkon Fighting Souls” apart.

In a market dominated by long-standing giants such as Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat, the collaboration between Marvel and Arc System Works seemed until now highly unlikely, almost unimaginable. On one side, there is an American comic book company renowned for its iconic characters and strict control over them; on the other, a Japanese studio celebrated for its expertise in stylized 2.5D animation, as seen in Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ. However, this unlikely alliance could potentially result in a masterpiece based on initial promises. Reed Baird (XDEV, PlayStation Studios) oversees the production of this monumental project, while Kazuto Sekine, Game Director, is working to establish an accessible game design without compromising complexity.

Visually, Marvel Tōkon Fighting Souls adopts a “Japanimation” rendering style characterized by rich light effects, bold black outlines, and highly segmented movements. Takeshi Yamanaka, a producer at Arc System Works, disclosed that an initial shader inspired by American comics was considered but Marvel later guided the team towards a more expressive, stylized approach that is inherently “Arc System.” Consequently, the Marvel Universe takes on a completely new dimension, striking a balance between fidelity to its origins and cultural reinterpretation. Early captures of New York or Doctor Doom’s lair showcase a polished artistic direction that rivals the most exquisite comic book panels.

On the roster front, the initially announced characters are Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Storm, Star-Lord, Doctor Doom, Ms. Marvel, and Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), each reimagined with a unique style and asymmetrical gameplay. The abilities and powers derived from Marvel lore are translated into special attacks, juggles, and ultimate skills that are both impressive and accessible. Moreover, the casting choice is not arbitrary, as Yamanaka explained; it strikes a balance between recognition, complementary combat styles, and the desire to surprise.

Traditionally, team fighting games have typically featured 2v2 or 3v3 formats. However, Arc System Works has chosen to break this convention with a unique 4v4 system, marking a first in the genre. The objective is to recreate the grand crossover appeal of Marvel comics while providing a dynamic and multi-strategic support framework. This new format allows players to focus on a single character without having to switch rapidly between multiple fighters, as teammates can contribute through coordinated assists, much like the tag combos seen in Dragon Ball FighterZ.
