After years of hiatus, the Virtua Fighter series is poised to make a comeback with its sixth installment, developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, renowned for its work on the Yakuza series. The project is currently titled “Virtua Fighter Project” and was further revealed during the Virtua Fighter Direct event held in conjunction with EVO Japan 2025, introducing a new character. Or rather, an existing one: Wolf Hawkfield, the fiery-haired Canadian wrestler, is set to re-enter the ring with a darker, more menacing appearance.
On social media, comparisons are drawn between him and Ganondorf (Link’s antagonist in The Legend of Zelda), earning him the nickname “Ganonwolf” due to their striking resemblance. To date, no playable footage has been released beyond a brief trial several months ago, and the only information available is that the graphics engine appears similar to Yakuza’s, featuring realistic rendering and detailed animations. It remains to be seen how this artistic direction will mesh with the mechanical requirements set by the series for its players. Meanwhile, Virtua Fighter 5 REVO has been officially announced for PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2, boasting rollback netcode and cross-play functionality.
