The State of Play event on February 12, 2025, began with the announcement of “Shinobi Art of Vengeance,” a new entry in what was believed to be an abandoned franchise. This revelation did not account for the fervent enthusiasm of French studio Lizardcube, the same team responsible for the critically acclaimed “Streets of Rage 4” released in 2020. The trailer, featuring only gameplay footage, showcases a project teeming with passion and, most importantly, talent. Whether it’s the decision to develop a 2D game that embodies Lizardcube’s distinctive aesthetic, the impressively dynamic gameplay which adeptly balances action and platforming with remarkable fluidity, or the reverence shown towards the original material, there is much to anticipate. The game promises a wide array of gameplay variations and scenarios, as evidenced by our ninja protagonist employing various techniques and engaging in activities such as riding a wolf and surfing through sequences that suggest speed and agility.
The wait is nearly over, as the game has been announced for release on August 29th for PC, PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Additionally, it was confirmed that another ninja will make a return in 2D, specifically in Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, which is being managed by DotEmu, partners of Lizardcube. What a fortunate coincidence.
