The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 has spotlighted “South of Midnight” in two precise ways. Firstly, its release date is now set for April 8, 2025, indicating the game is ready to immerse players in its fantastical universe inspired by Louisiana. This also marks an opportunity for Xbox and Compulsion Games studio to unveil the Story Trailer, revealing how Hazel ends up in a dreamlike world inhabited by strange creatures. Indeed, Hazel’s adventure begins after a hurricane sweeps away her home with her mother inside. The story progresses within the fictional city of Prospero, located in the southern United States, where Hazel’s journey to find her mother will also reveal truths about herself.
Behind each creature, particularly the bosses, lies a complex history. There is Two-Toed Tom, an enormous blind albino alligator as large as an island; Le Rougarou, a terrifying metamorphosing werewolf owl that resides in a dense, dark forest at the edge of the mountain; and Huggin’ Molly, a monstrous spider woman whose gown is made from a patchwork of children’s clothing mixed with her famous red thread, spun like a web. These creatures have been the focus of extensive research to create South of Midnight’s unique universe. The developers have stated that completing the main story will take players between 10 and 12 hours, which is noteworthy given today’s open-world games often require 50 to 70 hours to finish.
