In an era marked by deep divisions and the formation of factions within the video game industry, CI Games, known for the “The Lords of the Fallen” franchise, has taken a clear position: it opposes what some term as “woke” initiatives. This stance was articulated during a discussion with investors when Ryan Hill, the studio’s marketing director, stated that he does not support incorporating DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) into their games and is unwilling to follow political trends. During the conversation, Ryan Hill informed investors that the studio “prefers to focus on players’ experiences, featuring themes and characters designed for all audiences.” He also noted that many games associated with DEI have not performed well commercially, suggesting that embracing ‘wokeness’ could be a risk factor for commercial failure.
Recently, some video games have incorporated social or political themes into their content. However, it is evident that many players do not appreciate this trend, resulting in several high-profile game releases failing to meet commercial expectations over the past year. Going forward, our games will be developed with a focus on player enjoyment and commercial success. Therefore, we will not include any social or political messaging in these experiences, given the observed risks associated with such integration.
Ryan Hill has not provided a definition for “political agendas” or clarified what he considers to be “high risk” regarding the studio’s direction. Additionally, he did not specify which games he deemed to have “underperformed commercially” nor outlined his criteria for commercial success. While CI Games declined further comment on Hill’s investor statement, the studio’s CEO Marek Tyminski endorsed Hill’s position through a tweet, affirming that the studio would not include DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) elements in its games.
