One announcement that surprised everyone at the Game Awards ceremony was the grand return of Okami, now titled Okami Sequel. This is welcome news for fans of the wolf Amateratsu who had lost hope of ever seeing a sequel, given that the first game faced significant commercial failure. It is particularly surprising considering it’s Hideki Kamiya behind this unexpected revival, an individual who left Capcom and concluded Clover Studio’s journey with substantial financial setbacks. Okami 2 is being co-developed by several studios, including original Okami team members from M-TWO Inc, Machine Head Works Inc, and CLOVERS Inc, of which Hideki Kamiya is a part. Although we must wait for more details about the story behind this Okami Sequel, Hideki Kamiya has chosen to address the matter and explain his decision.
Message from Hideki Kamiya
Message to everyone
See you soon…
How much time has passed since this story concluded with those words? I never would have imagined the day would come when I would return to Ōkami to continue this tale with my own hands. Even now, I am overwhelmed by a cautious wonder, as if all of this were but a dream, and an indescribable joy at the thought that this miracle is indeed real.
This achievement would not have been possible without the dedicated individuals who worked tirelessly to bring this project to life, the friends who believed in me and joined me at CLOVERS Inc., and especially, the continued support from all of you for Okami over the years. For this, I sincerely and deeply thank you all.
This project is now officially underway, much like a powerful sun rising on the horizon. However, it currently stands as a small bud just beginning to bloom. We are committed to filling this new chapter of Ōkami with vibrant, colorful flowers and doing our best to honor the promise of “See you soon.”
Wait with excitement. We eagerly anticipate revealing what’s to come.
As of now, the intention to resume the Okami license dates back to summer 2023, and discussions between Capcom and Kamiya have been promising. The project is still in its early stages, with over a year of production ahead, but one certainty remains: the artistic direction featuring pastel colors and Japanese motifs will be maintained, as demonstrated in the Game Awards teaser.
Born in 1970 in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, Hideki Kamiya is the director of Resident Evil 2 (1998), Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Ōkami, Bayonetta, and The Wonderful 101. As an executive director, he was responsible for overseeing supervision, initial planning, and story development for Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta 3, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, and Sol Cresta.
After collaborating with Capcom, Clover Studios, and PlatinumGames, Hideki Kamiya joined CLOVERS Inc. in October 2024 as studio head and chief designer. He currently serves as the director for the highly anticipated “Ōkami sequel”.
