Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Progression System, Skill Tree, and Companions: Here’s How It Works

by Jonathan Dubinski

September has begun, and Electronic Arts is preparing for the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which marks the return of the franchise ten years after the last episode. Today, we will explore the gameplay mechanics in more detail, focusing specifically on the progression system, skill tree, and companion evolution: here’s how it works.

To accumulate experience, it is essential to complete as many quests as possible, with the understanding that more significant missions yield greater XP gains. Similar to other Action-RPGs, character development also contributes to helping the people of Thedas by investing time in building deeper relationships with members of the Veilguard. These earned experience points can then be allocated to a skill tree featuring unique nodes that unlock as you progress, allowing for customized builds. Each type of skill is represented by an icon:

Circle: Class (main skills and weapon handling) Diamond: Capacity (can be assigned to a capacity slot)

Average Round: Incorporates a major passive ability or an enhancement to existing abilities (such as adding effects or modifying current ones, for example ensuring a critical hit upon knockdown or extending range).

Little Hexagon: characteristic (modifies existing class skills such as counterattacks, for example by extending attack combos or the duration of blocking/deflecting projectiles)

Minor circular node: minor passive ability or stat increase (increases the efficiency of abilities, passive abilities, or stats) CRITICAL: The translation is complete as per your instructions. No additional comments or explanations have been included.

Like in Black Myth Wukong, the skill tree is not fixed and if you ever wish to redistribute your points elsewhere during the adventure, it’s entirely possible, and without costing resources. Practical.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will feature three distinct classes (Warrior, Mage, and Rogue), each providing access to three specializations categorized by faction. However, players do not need to belong to a specific faction to choose these specializations. For example, if you are part of the Shadow Guard, you can still select a Rogue of the Veil specialization as long as your class is Thief. Weapons and equipment can also be upgraded, with each item having its own statistics and properties, leading to numerous possibilities. BioWare notes that there are also cosmetic-only armors available in certain shops and during explorations.

As we are aware, a significant aspect of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s gameplay involves its companions, who play a crucial role in saving Thédas. Each member of a faction has their own level, and each level gained awards two skill points. Companions also have quests that enhance their relationship with the player, which is one of the primary methods for them to gain experience. Additionally, your companions can acquire experience through conversations and decisions made during gameplay. These companions manage their own equipment, which can be improved as well. In essence, expect to dedicate numerous hours to navigating menus in order to create optimal builds and navigate the adventure smoothly.
