Nostalgia often comes with a cost, which Arc System Works acknowledges. The company’s newly established European office is introducing Double Dragon Revive, an effort to breathe new life into the Double Dragon series in 2025. Developed by Yuke’s Co. in Japan, known for their work on the WWE series prior to 2K Games acquiring the license and ending Yuke’s involvement with it (a decision that may have been prudent), the game is a 3D project aiming to retain the classic beat ’em up, side-scrolling format to stay true to its roots. However, it must be noted that the character design lacks appeal and gives off an impression of being generic rather than having a distinctive identity.
Arc System Works is overseeing this project, viewing it as a high-quality endeavor that leverages their extensive experience in game development, especially in fighting games. The press release states that players will be able to enjoy the classic beat ’em up with contemporary gameplay enhancements. Both veterans and newcomers can appreciate the intuitive gameplay, which includes recovering weapons scattered throughout stages or using the terrain strategically. The release of Double Dragon Revive is scheduled for PC, PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, and Xbox One in mid-2025.
