By the end of 2023, SEGA officially announced its intention to revive old licenses. In a nostalgic video, it was revealed that reboots for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and even Streets of Rage were in progress. Details remained scarce until recently, but over the past few hours, information about the revival of Crazy Taxi has become clearer. In an extensive 7-minute video, project managers detailed their approach for this new iteration of Crazy Taxi, incorporating contemporary gaming trends. Earlier this year, there were rumors suggesting a focus on online multiplayer, and these have now been confirmed.
The team members featured in the video discuss an “open-world massively multiplayer” environment that aims to be larger in terms of surface area, with a primary focus on creating a more realistic city. Despite this, they emphasize that the atmosphere will remain fun and carefree. It is clear that games like Forza Horizon, The Crew, and Test Drive Unlimited have influenced the development approach for this new iteration of Crazy Taxi. More than 20 years have passed since the license was put on hold, and it is evident that video games have evolved significantly during this time. Given SEGA’s continued hiring of developers, patience will be required before the game’s release.
