Exciting news for Studio Ghibli fans: “The Boy and the Heron” is set to grace French screens on November 1st, 2023! This announcement, made just moments ago, brings joy to everyone who admires Hayao Miyazaki’s work. It’s a special moment as this will be his final film before retiring at the age of 82, marking ten years since the release of “The Wind Rises.” Originally known by its Japanese title “Kimi-Tachi Wa Do Ikiru Ka,” meaning “How Are You Living?”, the story follows Mahito, an 11-year-old boy who moves from Tokyo to a rural village after his mother tragically dies in a fire. Settling into life with his father on a sprawling estate, Mahito meets a mysterious smoke-colored heron that becomes his faithful companion and guide. Through their adventures, the film explores Mahito’s quest for understanding about the world and the mysteries of existence. Since its debut in Japan on July 14th last year, “The Boy and the Heron” has already captivated nearly 5 million viewers!
In 2020, three years into the making of “The Boy and the Heron,” Hayao Miyazaki was chugging along at a pace of just one minute of footage per month! Despite the prevalence of computer animation today, this Japanese master sticks to his roots with traditional hand-drawn techniques. It’s worth noting that his dear friend and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata, spent an incredible eight years crafting “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,” released in 2014. Speaking of premieres, “The Boy and the Heron” is set to make its big debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and the San Sebastián Film Festival. And for our French friends, it will shine on Tuesday, October 17th, during the Lumière Festival!
