A new key figure, Joseph Ziegler, the game director for Marathon, has announced his departure from the company after nearly four years. This announcement occurs in a particularly delicate context for Bungie, just weeks after a significant wave of layoffs impacting approximately 300 employees and following the departures of several historic executives. Ziegler’s exit marks the departure of one of the most important figures involved in Marathon’s creation. Joseph Ziegler joined Bungie in December 2022, bringing over 12 years of experience from Riot Games, where he notably worked on Valorant. Recruited to lead the development of Marathon, his mission was to support the transformation of Bungie’s iconic franchise into a new competitive multiplayer experience. His last day at Bungie was July 17, 2026. Ziegler announced his departure on X (formerly Twitter), thanking the player community and expressing pride in what the team had achieved. He confirmed that he is moving on to a new project, stating, “I’m going off to do something new elsewhere, and I’ll tell you more soon.”

Despite leaving, Ziegler expressed confidence that Marathon remains in good hands. Project leadership will now fall to Del Chafe III, a Bungie veteran of 15 years who has served as vice president of development since April 2024. He will be supported by Julia Nardin, the project’s creative director, who will continue to oversee the title’s global vision. According to Ziegler, both executives are already heavily involved in development and are prepared to guide Marathon toward its next phase, holding major roles within team leadership and ready to lead the game into an even brighter future. The game is currently struggling with low player counts and a lack of progression features. The Treasure Breaker update was a first step in the right direction, but its sufficiency to address these issues remains uncertain. Bungie’s success with Marathon is crucial, and the next few months will be decisive for the studio’s future. Bungie remains focused on Marathon and has promised that new information will be revealed soon. The studio will provide updates as they become available.
