Gibson has announced the launch of the Michael Schenker 1971 Flying V Collectors Edition, a meticulous recreation of one of the most influential guitars in hard rock and heavy metal. This limited edition captures every detail of the instrument used to record UFO’s first three albums, a tribute to Schenker’s pioneering work with UFO, Scorpions, and the Michael Schenker Group. Schenker’s iconic 1971 Flying V Medallion, which evolved from a cherry red ’71 model to black and then his signature black and white, inspired this collaboration between Gibson, Michael Schenker, and Kirk Hammett. Gibson Custom created this Collectors Edition based on precise 3D digitalizations of Schenker’s original guitar, which now resides in Kirk Hammett’s collection. The guitar features a mahogany body with a partially white-painted pickguard and a one-piece mahogany neck with a thin profile and volute. Its single-piece jacaranda fretboard has 22 medium jumbo frets and celluloid dot markers. The Flying V headstock has a split-color design, Schaller M6 tuners, and a Corian nut. Correcting earlier reports, the display block is mahogany, not rosewood.

This special edition includes uncovered T-Top humbuckers with Alnico 5 magnets. Each pickup has its own volume control, sharing a tone knob with CTS 500k potentiometers, plus a three-position Switchcraft selector switch and a 1/4-inch output jack. Limited to 50 hand-signed units, each guitar features Schenker’s signature on the back of the headstock. It comes in a custom rigid case replicating one adorned with Michael Schenker Group art, along with a commemorative ebony display block (medallion #56) and an authenticity certificate in a black and white envelope.
