To celebrate Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, The Pokémon Company announced Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, two new mainline games, during a special Pokémon Presents broadcast on Pokémon Day (February 27, 2026). This date commemorates the original Japanese release of Pokémon Red and Green on February 27, 1996. Developed by Game Freak and scheduled for release in 2027 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2, these games will transport players to an uncharted region with diverse environments: tropical forests, expansive oceans, grassy plains, and even an active volcano. The region’s dynamic day-night cycle will influence the Pokémon that can be found. Players can explore notable locations such as a floating tower and a beach town crisscrossed with aquatic bridges. The starter Pokémon are Browt (Plant type), Pombon (Fire type), and Gecqua (Water type). Browt is described as a small chick pea Pokémon that breathes chlorophyll energy; Pombon as a fiery puppy; and Gecqua as an aquatic gecko.

Pokémon Winds & Waves: Exploration, Survival, and Legendary Weather Pokémon in Indonesia-Inspired Archipelago

Early leaks from October 2025 and the revealed trailer suggest a greater focus on exploration and survival, featuring a procedurally generated archipelago inspired by Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Within this archipelago are dense jungles, mysterious seabeds, and legendary Pokémon linked to weather phenomena. Enhanced interaction mechanics will also allow for stronger bonds with Pokémon, potentially including the ability to ride them. The announcement also hinted at fresh customization options for Pikachu. Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu will appear as characters in both Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. While the presentation spotlighted these upcoming games, it also outlined other initiatives, including the 2026 World Pokémon Championships and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. The announcement did not include new details regarding FireRed, LeafGreen, or Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. Finally, Pokémon Version Feu and Pokémon Version Feuille are available now on the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store.
