Square Enix Releases New Version of Original Final Fantasy VII on PC

Square Enix has released an updated PC version of the 1997 RPG classic, Final Fantasy VII, now available on GOG and Steam. While this edition doesn’t introduce new story content, it includes quality-of-life improvements for modern players, including: 3x Speed Mode: Accelerates gameplay by up to three times, affecting map exploration, battles, and certain narrative sequences. Disable Random Encounters: Allows players to focus on exploration and story by turning off random combat encounters. Enhanced Combat Mode: Automatically restores HP and MP during battles and rapidly fills the Limit Break bar when activated. Autosave: Automatically saves game progress, reducing the reliance on manual save points. Priced at $11.99, the new PC version of Final Fantasy VII also includes online features such as achievements and cloud saves. A Character Booster is available to increase HP, MP, and Gil levels, and the game has been optimized for the latest Windows operating systems. Square Enix advises players to enable Cloud Saving in the Network Settings of the Final Fantasy VII launcher to safeguard their save files.

Upgraded Final Fantasy VII PC Version with Quality-of-Life Improvements Now Available for Free

Existing owners of Final Fantasy VII on Steam will receive this new version as a free update. Square Enix has renamed the previous version “Final Fantasy VII 2013 Edition” in user libraries and removed it from sale. However, save files from the 2013 edition are not compatible with the new version, so players wishing to continue existing playthroughs must do so with the 2013 edition. Separately, Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on June 3rd. The company is also developing the third installment of the FFVII Remake trilogy for the Nintendo Switch 2. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has stated that the Nintendo Switch 2 version will not compromise the game’s quality. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is currently available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
