Team Moves On from Crimson Desert: Unveils Their New Project

Following the release of Crimson Desert, South Korean developer Pearl Abyss has revealed its revised priorities. According to Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jinyoung, the studio’s focus has shifted to DokeV, an expansive RPG with a distinctive art style, after a period of uncertainty about the project’s status. During a shareholder assembly on March 27, Heo Jinyoung explained that the simultaneous development of Crimson Desert and DokeV, along with the creation of the Blackspace Engine, caused significant delays for both titles, which were announced in 2019. Crimson Desert was selected to debut the new engine, making it the studio’s top priority and slowing progress on DokeV. With Crimson Desert now available, having sold over three million copies and received a substantial update, the team has transitioned to DokeV to accelerate its production. Pearl Abyss estimates that another two to three years will be needed to complete and refine DokeV. Initially conceived as a mobile-focused game, DokeV evolved into a full-fledged RPG in 2021. A gameplay trailer released late last year showcased DokeV’s transformation. The game features an anime-inspired aesthetic with appealing characters and creatures set in a contemporary world, and will include character customization options, unlike Crimson Desert.

Shifting Spotlight to New Action-Adventure RPG DokeV – Updates in 2026; Plan 8 Delayed to Late 2027/2028

Given the considerable scale of Crimson Desert, DokeV is also anticipated to offer a similarly large map. Pearl Abyss intends to provide more detailed updates on DokeV in 2026. Pearl Abyss is also developing Plan 8, a first-of-its-kind exosuit MMORPG shooter announced in 2019. However, updates on Plan 8 have been scarce due to the studio’s focus on Crimson Desert. As DokeV is now the priority, news regarding Plan 8 is unlikely before late 2027 or 2028. Originally presented as an open-world MMO centered on monster collecting, DokeV was reclassified in 2021 as an action-adventure RPG. The narrative revolves around Dokebi, creatures that accompany players and grow by drawing energy from people’s dreams.
