Netflix Announces Japanese Live-Action Return of City Hunter

In 2024, Netflix released a live-action adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo’s renowned manga, City Hunter, with a sequel planned for 2027. City Hunter follows Ryo Saeba (Ryohei Suzuki), who aims to eradicate crime but is easily distracted by women, a weakness that ultimately leads to his partner’s death. Now, he must protect his partner’s sister and form an unexpected alliance to seek justice. Yuichi Satoh directed the action-comedy, which showcases both the serious and comical sides of Saeba. The first film topped Netflix’s global list of non-English films in 2024, becoming the most-watched in 32 countries, including Brazil, generating significant fan support for a follow-up film. Suzuki has stated that this support inspired the dedication to creating an equally enjoyable second film. Currently in production and slated for release in 2027, City Hunter 2 aims to build upon the foundation of the first movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, original creator Tsukasa Hojo visited the set and gave Suzuki a thumbs-up for his portrayal of the character. Keiichiro Shiraki, the sequel’s director, has acknowledged the pressure of maintaining the franchise’s quality. Shinichi Takahashi has called City Hunter 2 a particularly emotional project.

City Hunter 2 marks Netflix’s first-ever sequel to a Japanese film. Junpei Yamaoka is writing the script, and HoriPro Inc. and Filmmakers Inc. are producing the film for Netflix.
