Yakuza Studio Unveils More of Stranger Than Heaven in Trailer

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and Like A Dragon, has released a new trailer for its upcoming RPG, Stranger Than Heaven, showcasing a narrative that spans five distinct historical periods in Japan. The trailer, titled “Five Eras,” previews the journey players will undertake through five Japanese cities, each representing a specific era: 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965. This structure adds depth to the narrative and gameplay, expanding the studio’s repertoire beyond Japanese organized crime and modern times by blending time exploration elements with dynamic combat. “We can’t reveal much more than what was shown today, but as you might imagine, covering five cities and five eras is an enormous task,” said producer Masayoshi Yokoyama. “We’re putting immense care into bringing these rarely explored times and places to life in games.” The trailer also showcased the game’s dynamic combat system, including weapons, grapples, one-versus-many fights, and environmental interactions. Yokoyama added, “This is a new level of combat design for us, and what you saw is just the tip of the iceberg, with much more to be revealed soon.”

Stranger Than Heaven: A Deep Dive on May 6 – Xbox Presents RGG Studio’s Time-Spanning Narrative

Stranger Than Heaven debuted at the March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview event. RGG Studio first announced the game in December 2024 at The Game Awards under the working title Project Century, revealing its official title the following June. RGG Studio will present a special broadcast in partnership with Xbox on May 6, titled “Xbox Presents: A Deep Dive into Stranger Than Heaven,” to provide a closer look at elements revealed in the trailer. Yokoyama said, “There’s so much we’re eager to share, from the incredible cast to the music, the combat experience, and much more. We truly feel it will surprise and (hopefully) impress people.” In related news, the “Cost of Hope” DLC for Stranger Than Heaven is expected this summer. Other recent announcements from different developers include Moosa: Dirty Fate, a third-person combat game set in Feudal Korea, and Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, an action RPG in the World of Darkness setting slated for Summer 2027.
