Sony’s Dynamic PlayStation Store Pricing Could Make You Pay Double for a Game

Insider Gaming reports that Sony is testing dynamic pricing on the PlayStation Store, and the resulting price disparities are sparking controversy among players. Insider Gaming’s investigation revealed significant price variations in the PlayStation digital store. In some cases, players could pay nearly twice as much for the same game as their friends on the same day. Screenshots shared by Insider Gaming highlight these discrepancies, most notably for Stellar Blade. During the PlayStation Store’s Spring sale, one of Insider Gaming’s writers received a personalized offer of 70% off Stellar Blade, reducing the price to $20.99. Meanwhile, Insider Gaming identified other users as “regular customers” who only saw a 43% discount, setting the price at $39.89. This amounts to a nearly $50 difference for the same product. YouTube’s NikTek also demonstrated dynamic pricing by purchasing Stellar Blade and Astro Bot: Digital Deluxe Edition for $20.99 and $28.69, respectively. Searching the PlayStation Store without being signed in, NikTek found different prices: $39.99 for Stellar Blade and $39.59 for Astro Bot. Separately, another user reported a discount change that increased the discount on a title to 34%, bringing the price to $39.59.

Personalized PlayStation Pricing Stirs Controversy: Loyal Players Pay More

The PlayStation Store’s algorithm appears to evaluate a user’s account age, transaction history, and login frequency to determine personalized discounts. Sony is using substantial discounts to entice inactive or indecisive players, offering them better deals than those available to loyal and active customers. This practice is limited to first-party titles published by PlayStation. Sony reportedly implemented this dynamic pricing system on March 25, 2026, following the rollout of a new pricing strategy in November 2025. This pricing model is allegedly being used for major titles showcased during State of Play events. It remains to be seen how players will react in the long term as they discover that their loyalty to the PlayStation brand may be costing them more.
