Sony has closed Dark Outlaw Games, a PlayStation Studios developer led by Jason Blundell, best known for his work on the Call of Duty Zombies series. The news, shared today by Jason Schreier on Bluesky, is the latest in a series of studio closures that include London Studio and Firewalk Studios. Dark Outlaw Games was established in 2021 by Blundell, formerly the creative director at Treyarch. The studio aimed to create innovative experiences for the PlayStation ecosystem, but it never released an official title. Schreier reported on a forum last month that the closure had occurred. The studio’s formation followed Sony’s cancellation of one of Blundell’s previous projects, which was part of a publishing agreement with Deviation Games and had an initial budget exceeding $200 million. Formed at Sony’s request, Dark Outlaw Games consisted of former Deviation Games members. These changes are not limited to studio closures; Sony is also reducing its mobile development efforts, resulting in approximately 50 layoffs. Roughly 90 professionals were part of the mobile development team; some have been reassigned to other internal Sony projects, while others face dismissal.

A Sony representative stated that the company is “committed to supporting our team during this transition” but did not provide specific reasons for the closure. This decision occurs amidst a wave of industry cuts. Analysts attribute these changes to global economic challenges, including inflation and shifts in the gaming market. Blundell, who left Activision in 2020 after more than a decade of contributions to successful franchises, had expressed enthusiasm for his new venture. However, Dark Outlaw Games remained discreet, never publicly announcing any games in development before its closure.
