Enabling Handheld Boost Mode on the Nintendo Switch 2 allows games designed for the original Switch to run at higher resolutions and frame rates, similar to TV mode. In some games, activating Boost Mode may incorrectly trigger Docked Mode profiles, leading to display issues. Additionally, the touchscreen becomes disabled, and connected Joy-Con 2 controllers will be recognized as a Switch Pro Controller. This enhancement focuses solely on improving the experience for legacy titles, optimizing them to better utilize the new hardware. In the Resident Evil Requiem Switch 2 version, DLSS enables clearer images than the Series S’s 720p, according to Digital Foundry. The Switch 2’s version of Fallout 4 also exhibits substantial improvements over its initial reveal, although its performance relative to the PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series S remains unclear. Resident Evil 7 also benefits from the enhanced hardware, while Resident Evil Village shows no significant difference with DLSS enabled. Digital Foundry notes that the benefits of Handheld Boost Mode vary between games, but perceptible improvements are present in all tested cases. For example, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which ran at 720p on the original Switch, now runs natively at 1080p with Boost activated, resulting in a much clearer image without compromising performance. Persona 5 Royal and Yoshi’s Crafted World, which previously ran below 720p, now run at significantly higher resolutions, producing sharper and more detailed visuals. The Nintendo Switch 2 uses its additional power to run games like DOOM and DOOM Eternal at higher resolutions and image quality, incorporating graphical features previously exclusive to docked play.
