Paramount+ Cancels Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Series

Paramount has canceled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy after only one season. The series, intended to attract a younger audience to the Star Trek universe, has already filmed its second and final season, though a release date has not been set. The cancellation follows a lukewarm reception for the first season, which never broke into Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts, according to multiple reports. Despite this, Paramount had renewed the series for a second season late last year, prior to the first episode’s debut. In a statement, CBS Studios and Paramount thanked Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the cast and crew, adding, “We are incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into creating Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. We eagerly await sharing the second and final season with everyone, continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that has been achieved with this series.” Showrunners Kurtzman and Landau assured fans that the second season would provide a worthy conclusion, stating, “We are very proud of what we have accomplished together in this series, and the world can see the extraordinary work of these artists when the second season airs.”

Uncertain Future for Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek TV Projects After Starfleet Academy Cancellation

On Rotten Tomatoes, the show received an 87% positive rating from critics, but only 51% from viewers. With no Star Trek TV shows currently in production besides Strange New Worlds, which has two seasons yet to air, Alex Kurtzman’s future is uncertain as executive producer of the franchise’s television projects. CBS Studios and Paramount are reportedly in negotiations with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout production company to renew or extend his contract, which runs through 2026; however, it is unclear whether any new deal would still involve his oversight of Star Trek. Kurtzman, Landau, and Violo have also released an open letter addressing the cancellation of Starfleet Academy. They pledged to “finish strong.”
