Buffy Reboot Halts: Hulu Abandons Project Amid Script and Vision Disagreements

The planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot will not proceed, as Hulu has decided to abandon the project. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was slated to star and serve as executive producer, announced the cancellation on social media on March 14. In her announcement, Gellar thanked director Chloé Zhao, with whom she collaborated to portray Buffy in a new phase of her life, and acknowledged Hulu. She did not disclose specific reasons for Hulu’s decision. However, Deadline reports that the streamer was dissatisfied with the script and, separately, did not fully embrace Zhao’s vision. Gellar concluded her announcement video with a nod to a well-known quote from the original Buffy. Rumors had recently suggested that the pilot’s script would undergo revisions in a final attempt to save New Sunnydale, but Hulu ultimately rejected the idea, surprising Gellar. Despite this setback, Deadline’s sources indicate that Hulu has not given up on Buffy entirely and will consider alternative approaches.
